What a first Grand Prix of the year it has been at Melbourne, full of excitement and drama!!?! Only 19 cars lined up on the grid today as Ricciardo started from the pits due to some last minute issues on his car, he joined the others on the third lap around the circuit. There was a bit of a delay at the start due to an unknown reason and all the cars had to do 2 formation laps rather than the usual one which meant the race distance was decreased by 1 lap from 58 laps to 57 laps.
On the front row of the grid was the man with 6 poles in Australia, Lewis Hamilton alongside him was quadruple world champion Sebastian Vettel in the Scuderia Ferrari behind them were Valterri Bottas in the Mercedes and Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari, completing the top 5 was Max Verstappen in the Red-Bull.
Laps 1 and 2
Lights out and away we go…. not much drama on the first lap just Erricson and Magnussen turning into each other going into the gravel from which they both recovered through pit-stops. Alonso manages to gain a couple of places.
Daniel Ricciardo joins the race from the pits as the mechanics manage to repair his car.
Hamilton pits and changes from the Ultras to the Softs. The 3.3 seconds stop just causes him to get stuck behind Max Verstappen who he says on his team radio is “impossible to pass”!. Vettel in the Ferrari stays out during that time gaining a few seconds which turned out to be very cruicial.
Perhaps the most important lap in context of the race. Vettel pits and his crew in the pit manage a 3.0 second stop which puts him just ahead of Max Verstappen who was being chased by Lewis Hamilton, Max tries to pass Vettel but couldn’t despite the speed advantage
Vettel on his fresh tyres pulls away from the Mercedes of Hamilton and manages to get a lead of 6 seconds. On Lap 28 Ricciardo’s car has a power failure and the breaks overheat forcing him to pullover and retire on his home Grand Prix, such a shame… Vettel manages to maintain a steady lead of 8 seconds while Alsono battles rookie Ocon and Sergio Perez for 10th place, they both manage to pass him and his car gives up due to a suspension problem.
Vettel drives comfortably to win his Second Australian Grand Prix and for the first time in a Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton takes second place followed by Bottas only a few seconds. Kimi finishes fourth, Max fifth, Massa sixth followed by Perez in seventh and Sainz in eighth Kvyat in ninth and Esteban Ocon in tenth and the final points position.
It’s the first time since the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix that Ferrari have won and for the first time since 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix that Vettel has led the drivers Championship points. Ferrari are currently leading the Constructors Championship with 37 points, 5 points ahead of Mercedes who have 32 points currently. 6 teams managed to score points in this race that are Ferrari, Mercedes, Red-Bull, Force India, Toro Rosso and Williams Martini Racing.
Here are the points of the drivers after the first race of 2017!
